What is Shank You?

Shank You is a volleyball club that provides opportunities for girls aged 10-18 to play volleyball in the off-season. We have teams that allow over 400 volleyball players to play.

What are the costs?

Shank You strives to keep our fees low and reasonable to give every girl an opportunity to play, no matter their financial situation. Fees vary depending on the age group and type of team you play on. Please refer to our "Shank You Fees" tab at the top of our welcome page for more information on our fees.

What do the fees cover?

Fees cover securing coaches, gym time, uniforms (tops and spandex), equipment such as nets/volleyballs/ball carts and tournament entry fees. Fees do not cover hotel accommodations (for travel players), gas, entry for parents into the tournaments (if there is one) and food at the tournament.

Who can try out for Shank You?

For travel, any girl from any school between the ages of 12-18 can try out. For high school club, any girl from any school can try out. For our feeder teams, any girls may try out for the program that is for the high school they will eventually attend. **Please see our "Age Group Expectations" tab for information on what age group your daughter is eligible for age-wise.

What is the difference between travel and club/non-travel?

Shank You offers opportunities for girls to participate in either travel or non-travel. *Travel volleyball girls participate in tournaments around the midwest with their ultimate goal being playing at AAU Nationals in Orlando, Florida. Travel players practice 2-3 times a week and play in about 10 tournaments between January and June. Travel volleyball is for players that want to improve on an elite level and compete against the best competition in the country while gaining exposure necessary to play at the collegiate level. Coaches and players at this level should be willing to make a serious commitment to their team. *Club (non-travel or feeder) girls participate in our local power league that plays around the Elkhart/South Bend/Michigan City area. They practice 1-2 times a week and play in 4 one-day tournaments from January to March. Coaches and players at this level are looking to improve overall volleyball skills at a competitive level without having to make the time or financial commitment to travel.

Who can play Shank You travel?

Any girl from any school from 12-18 can play for our travel teams. We have 14 & under, 15 & under, 16 & under, 17 & under and 18 & under teams. See the "Age Group Expectations" to see what age your daughter would fit into based on her birth date. Due to IHSAA rules, at the high school level, only 3 girls from a particular high school can play on a team. This means the travel teams are a combination of players representing various high schools. Travel is run under its own section of Shank You and does not affiliate with any particular school, but rather, works to develop players for ALL of the area programs.

Why is high school club its own division instead of being part of our high school program?

IHSAA has a rule that only 3 girls from a high school can play together on a team so we have to combine girls from ALL the high schools in order to fill teams. This also provides players the opportunity to play with more girls at their talent level and from other schools.

What does "feeder" team mean?

Shank You has several area high school programs involved including: Central, Concord, ECA, Fairfield, Goshen, Jimtown, John Glenn, Memorial, Northridge and Wawasee. In order to keep it organized, we have put one person in charge of each of these programs. The program will have teams, coaches and gym time for girls that will not travel but will eventually attend their high school. They have teams in the 10 & under, 12 & under and 14 & under divisions. So if your daughter is in 5th grade and will attend Northridge when she eventually gets to high school, you need to attend the Shank You Northridge informational meeting and tryout. If your daughter is in 8th grade and will eventually attend Goshen, you need to look under the Shank You Goshen tab for your information. Once a girl is in high school or too old to play on a 14 & under team, she no longer is considered part of a feeder program and then becomes part of the high school club program.

How does a player get picked for a particular team?

Shank You assigns players to teams based on a combination of try-out results and team composition needs. Try-out results are based on volleyball skill, attitude, work ethic and communication. Team composition needs are determined by each coach as far as positions and talent level needed to best compete at the designated level. The ultimate goal is to assign players to a team where they will have the best chance of individual success and be able to contribute to the team's success. We want girls to play at a level that matches or is just above their own level so they can continue to grow and gain confidence as a volleyball player.

How many players are on a team?

Team size ranges from 8-12 girls. It depends on the needs of the team but we try to keep team sizes down so girls have more of an opportunity to contribute on the court.

Where are practices?

Each team practices at a different location. We try to accommodate players and coaches as much as possible but in order to keep fees down, we take what we can get when it comes to gym time!

Who do I contact for questions and/or concerns?

Please contact your specific coach first and then if need be, your parent board rep. If the question cannot be answered or the issue cannot be resolved that way, talk to the head of your program. If the question/issue still cannot be handled, it will then be brought to the board of directors. Please remember the 48-hour rule to talk to a coach about an issue...see the "Rules/Guidelines" tab for more information on this!

Does Shank You have things for parents to wear?

Shank You offers sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts and sling bags for players and parents to order. Please see your coach and/or parent board rep for ordering information. An order sheet is usually given out as the beginning of the season.

When will we get tournament information?

Club tournament dates are already set and can be found under the tab "Power League Info." The specific location and playing time for your team is usually up on the website the Wednesday before the play date. All schedules for the power league will be under the "Power League Info" tab. Travel tournaments are usually decided upon at the initial parent/player meeting at the beginning of the season.

What is your philosophy of playing time?

Coaches have the discretion to play girls based on their ability, work ethic, attendance in practice, attitude, etc. We understand that playing time helps develop players but playing time is not always ensured. Please see our "Volleyball Literature" tab for more help in dealing with playing time.

What about conflicts with other school events or sports? Can I still play Shank You if I play another sport?

The answer is yes. Many of our successful travel and club players are involved in multiple sports and activities outside of Shank You. It is the job of the player to communicate any conflicts with the coach and work out the issue. Understand that most coaches are willing to be flexible but attendance at practice is very important and absences need to be minimal.
