12 and under
At this age winning or losing does not matter. The emphasis is
on passing, setting, and attacking. They should also work on communicating with
their teammates on the court. Our number one goal is that they develop a love
for the game, so they will want to continue to develop their skills.
14 and under
At this age winning or losing should not be the main
focus. The expectation is that they should be able to overhand serve and should
know the basic fundamentals of passing, setting, and attacking more effectively.
They should be able to run offense and understand the concept of defense. They
should demonstrate good communication skills on the court, and understand the
emphasis of volleyball as a team sport.
16 and under
Winning will become more important, as it is a qualitative
demonstration that they are acquiring and applying the skills. At this age group
they need to work hard at the skills they have learned at a younger age and
build upon them. One major focus is their ability to read on defense and adjust
when attacking the ball on offense. By now they should continuously be
communicating on the court.
18 and under
Winning will become even more important, as it is a
qualitative demonstration that they have acquired and applied the skills. Basic
skills should be mastered and should only need minor refinements. The major
emphasis is on enhancement of the finer points of the game both offensively and
defensively. They should have good communication skills both on the court and on
the bench.
